PC market to grow again in 2018; Macs get more space

The last time we talked about the situation in the PCs (and, in this post, when I say “PC”, understand it as “personal computer”, that is, including Macs), she was at a very good moment: throughout 2017, computer sales fell 0, 2% over the previous year. Ma's devices, in turn, had something to celebrate, as they swam against the sea and saw their sales grow year-over-year.

Now, the scenario is different: Macs continue to grow, but the industry as a whole is also for the first time in six years! gaining back a dash, however small.

Yesterday, two of the world's largest market analysis firms released their reports for the PC segment in the second quarter of 2018, indicating good news for manufacturers. THE Gartner indicated a growth of 1.4% in world sales of computers in this period compared to the second quarter of 2017, with the Lenovo (market leader) and the Dell (third place) pulling the line with the most out they had growth of 10.5% and 9.5% in sales, respectively.

THE Apple was the fourth company that most sold computers in the period, after the two mentioned above and the runner-up HP. Its year-over-year growth was 3%, with almost 4.4 million Macs dispatched in the second quarter of that year.

According to Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, the growth of PCs is mainly due to the corporate market; the distancing of the domestic public from this segment, in turn, continues to occur and even more accentuated:

The growth in PC sales in the second quarter of 2018 was driven by demand in the business market. In the home consumer universe, the fundamental market structure (due to changes in the behavior of the PC user) remains the same, impacting the growth of the sector. Consumers are using their smartphones for even more household tasks, such as social media, calendar, payments and purchases, which is reducing the need for a personal computer.

THE IDC he also released his report about the same period, which brings generally similar results although with an inversion in the positions of the two leaders, which can be explained by a different analysis method. In the graph, it is interesting to note the growth or fall trends of each manufacturer:

note that neither Gartner nor IDC includes iPads in the count of personal computers shipped by Apple (which is a topic to be discussed, since Surfaces enter Microsoft's account) if Ma's tablets were in the account, the company would easily win the first place in both lists. On the other hand, Chromebooks are also not considered by firms, which could make manufacturers like HP and Samsung skip a few places.
