Out: Apple releases macOS High Sierra 10.13 for all users! [atualizado 2x: macOS Server 5.4]

As announced a few weeks ago, Apple has just launched the macOS High Sierra 10.13 for all users. His final build is 17A365.

Like the other three Apple operating systems released last week (iOS 11, watchOS 4 and tvOS 11), macOS High Sierra was presented in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2017, and as its name already indicates it brings good improvements over macOS Sierra in addition to some new features.

Siri on macOS High Sierra

It comes with a new version of Safari which promises to make it again the fastest browser in the world (in addition to automatic video blocking and a new anti-tracking system), improved search system in Mail, improvements and more features in the Photos app including editing Live Photos, migration to the new Apple File System (APFS), H.265 video support (HEVC, ie, High-Efficiency Video Coding), possibility to take photos during FaceTime calls, engine Metal 2 graphic with many optimizations in the interface and preparation for virtual reality, improvements in Siri, among others.

Photos on macOS High Sierra

We published a single compiled of screenshots of the system, also showing other details like an updated Siri icon, new split screen in Mail, items pinned to Notes, etc. It also comes, of course, with new wallpapers, many new Emojis and several new features for developers.

A feature that will arrive in a future update will be Messages on iCloud, which will synchronize all your messages from Apple's communication network with the cloud. This was in beta testing, but Apple chose to improve it a little more before turning the key to the general public.

Compatibility

There is no change or novelty here. As we have previously announced, macOS High Sierra is compatible with all Macs that already run Sierra today (with the exception of a few features isolated from it).

Here are the models, therefore:

  • MacBook or iMac: end of 2009 or higher
  • MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro: 2010 or higher

APFS

This is an important and highly complex transition, which Apple mastered with iOS 10.3 and which also appears to be smooth on macOS High Sierra.

As we have already explained here on the website, APFS is a modern file system, created by Apple and totally designed for flash storage. Therefore, when upgrading to High Sierra, only systems equipped with SSDs will be converted to it, but nothing prevents the user from doing this manually later, if he really wants to migrate to APFS (even if there is no noticeable gain).

The only thing in this story is that, in the initial version of the High Sierra, owners of Macs with Fusion Drives will not even be able to convert manually. This was happening in the betas, but probably due to problems Apple said that the functionality will only return in a future update. That is, if you have a Mac with Fusion Drive and installed a High Sierra beta that converted to AFPS, you will have to return to HFS +.

APFS is compatible with the FileVault encryption system, but Boot Camp users should not migrate to it as they will not be able to read / write to volumes formatted in this way.

Before installing

Remember the magic word: backup.

The testing phase for operating systems like macOS is long to avoid serious problems in the upgrade process, but since no perfect software (and you run risks like even running out of power in the middle of the process), it is good to be on your guard.

OS X Yosemite 10.10 cone - Time Machine

The simplest and best way is to use Time Machine itself, a backup system built into macOS. If you already use it, just open the System Preferences and check, before installing High Sierra, if everything is activated correctly and if the last backup made by it recently (from today, even because it runs hourly) .

If for some reason you don't like it or don't want to use Time Machine, just make sure you have your files saved somewhere. It can be in the cloud (if you trust the service where you are going to host them), on an external HDD / SSD, on a USB stick, on CDs / DVDs (hehe) it doesn't matter. A very good alternative software is the Carbon Copy Cloner.

Oh, and if you are interested in upgrading to High Sierra, naturally you must be a person who is always up to date with your system and software. Still, it is worth remembering: before proceeding, be running the latest version of Sierra (10.12.6).

How to update

First of all, a tip: if you are reading this post right after it was published, on the afternoon of September 25th, it means that Apple's servers must now be overloaded with people from all over the world downloading the update. So it doesn't cost to leave to do it later or until tomorrow, not least because the update process takes a little while (especially more this time, with the conversion to APFS).

The most practical way to upgrade to macOS High Sierra by downloading it from the Mac App Store:

Although the system is considered an update to Sierra, it does not appear as a normal update because no one is required to update for it.

For those who prefer, we will also post a direct download link here.

What if I want to do a clean installation?

A lot of people like to take advantage of these releases of great new operating systems to make a clean installation, that is, erase everything and start from scratch without any garbage / traces of previous installations.

Obviously, even if you take this route you will need a complete backup of your data. After all, it is one thing to reinstall the system and its applications from scratch; another lose documents, photos, videos, etc. This is all you can pull back later and take the opportunity to organize yourself better, discard old / unnecessary things and go on.

If you want to proceed in this way, you will first need to create a boot disk. It is possible to use an external HDD / SSD, a flash drive or an SD card (if your Mac has a slot for cards) to be your boot disk. Choose a disc that can be formatted, as this is one of the first steps in the process.

You will be able to choose one of the two ways to create your installation disc, using applications or through the Terminal itself.

APPLICATIONS

Both DiskMaker X and Disk Creator are free and one hand on the wheel if you are not very familiar with Terminal (although it is a very simple process to do everything for it, too). The process described for creating the macOS High Sierra disk is also valid for other versions of the system, it is worth mentioning.

Both have instructions for the disc creation process, just follow the step-by-step instructions.

TERMINAL

If you have already finished downloading macOS High Sierra from the Mac App Store, separated the external drive and want to use the Terminal to create your boot disk, just follow the steps below (in this example, the external disk is named ):

sudo /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/ --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app
  1. With your external disk connected to your Mac, open the Terminal (located in / Applications / Utilities /);
  2. Copy and paste in the Terminal window the following command above.
  3. The Terminal asks for your user password. Type it and press Enter;
  4. You will be warned that your external drive will be erased. To confirm, press Y (from "Yes") and then Enter;
  5. After your disk is erased, Time Machine will ask if you want to use it as a backup disk; click on “No Use”;
  6. Terminal copies the installation files to your external disk in a process that will take a few good minutes;
  7. When the process is complete, the message “Copy Complete” appears in the Terminal window.

DELETING YOUR MAC AND INSTALLING THE SYSTEM

  1. Restart the computer by holding down the key (Option) during the reset;
  2. Select the external disk created in the Terminal;
  3. Select the Disk Utility and click "Continue";
  4. Select the Macintosh HD in the left list and click on the “Delete” tab;
  5. In the "Format" pop-up menu, choose the option "Mac OS Expanded (Chronological Reg.)", Type a name for your disk (Macintosh HD) and click "Delete";
  6. After the disc is erased, exit Disk Utility;
  7. Select "Reinstall macOS" and follow the instructions on the screen.

After the installation is complete, add your files back to your Mac, either by retrieving them from Time Machine or dragging them from your external drive.
