OS X 10.11 El Capitan and iOS 9 will work on all Macs and iGadgets with OS X 10.10 Yosemite and iOS 8

Today we saw a lot of news at the opening of WWDC 2015 probably the most full of content in 26 years: for an instant, I saw Craig Federighi literally running to say everything!

iOS 9 and OS X 10.11

But for us, users, an important question remained in the air: of all the news announced in the OS X 10.11 El Capitan and in iOS 9, which will we have access to on our devices?

The good news is that Apple sent it right off the bat by not increasing the hardware requirements of its new systems. Both El Capitan and iOS 9 will work on the same Macs and iGadgets than their respective predecessors. This is great, since both promise several optimizations for example, the functionality of Thinning app, created to help reduce the storage consumption of applications on iOS, be excellent for devices with 8GB or 16GB of capacity.

For El Capitan, Apple promises support for the following Macs:

  • iMac (mid 2007 or later);
  • MacBook Air (late 2008 or later);
  • MacBook (Aluminum from late 2008, early 2009 or later);
  • Mac mini (early 2009 or later);
  • MacBook Pro (mid / late 2007 or later);
  • Mac Pro (early 2008 or later);
  • Xserve (early 2009).

J for iOS 9, all iGadgetsreleased from 2011 will be supported, including iPhones 4s and iPads 2! that's right, an operating system launched in 2015 will run on devices four years ago.

iOS 9 - Availability

Obviously, not all features will work on all devices. On OS X, the requirements for AirDrop and Handoff remain the same, which means that they will be limited to some Mac models by default. On iOS 9, in addition to AirDrop support limitations, Apple offers side-by-side multitasking on the iPad Air 2 only. Slide Over and Picture-in-Picture, also included in it, luckily will still be compatible with the iPad mini 2 and 3, and with the iPad Air of first generation.

Of course, some of these details may still change until both operating systems are officially released to the general public. We'll be connected!
