Orkut was released 15 years ago; remind curiosities and polemics of the network | Social networks

Orkut was launched exactly 15 years ago, on January 24, 2004. The connection site became a fever among Brazilians in the 2000s and made Internet users headlong into the wave of social networks. However, due to the evolution and dynamism of the social media scenario, the Google platform was discontinued in September 2014. Until today, those who lived this time miss to be part of communities, add friends with scrap and dispute the top of testimonials, among other activities.

1. Difficulty retrieving Orkut photos

In June 2014, when Google announced that Orkut would be discontinued, a two-year deadline was set for users to back up old photos using the Google Takeout tool. In 2016, with the end of the period determined, it was no longer possible to retrieve data from the social network.

Who missed the deadline regrets today: According to Google Trends data, the search engine still records search for search terms related to photo rescue. In recent weeks, interest has intensified with the popularization of the 10 Year Challenge.

Orkut initially accepted only people invited by other users. Then the passport holder could call up to ten friends, and so on. With the scheme, the site became known as "exclusive", which aroused the curiosity of netizens. At the time, Orkut tickets were auctioned on international websites such as eBay and national websites such as Mercado Livre.

Ever wondered where the name of the social network came from? Launched in January 2004, Orkut was named after its creator, Turkish software engineer Orkut Bykkkten. The platform was initially developed as an independent project during Bykkkten's postgraduate degree at Stanford University, and was later refined when the engineer was already working at Google. In 2016, two years after the end of Orkut, Bykkkten launched a new social network, hello.

4. Brawl between Brazilians and Americans and change of headquarters

Before becoming popular in Brazil, Orkut was full of US users. In June 2004, however, five months after the launch of the social network, Brazil represented 30.65% of its members; the United States, 30.12%. The rapid and intense adhesion of the Brazilians platform intrigued and irritated the Americans.

Were there even communities to complain about newcomers like WTF, A Crazy Brazilian Invasion? ("What the hell, a crazy Brazilian invasion?"), Which addressed issues such as the use of Portuguese in communities. Little by little, foreigners were leaving the social network. Until August 2008, Orkut's headquarters were in California, but the Brazilian presence became so strong that Google announced that the site would be operated in the country by Google Brazil in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The change was also due to the growth of legal issues.

In 2007 a website was created to gather the weirdness posted on the social network: it was Orolas Prolas. The initiative was very successful and ranged from embarrassing community reports to funny photos. Since the end of Orkut in September 2014, the site name has been shortened to Pearls, which now houses quirky content featured on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo Answers.

If on Instagram and Facebook likes are the way to evaluate content, Orkut could honor friends with three attributes: sexy (represented by a heart), confident (represented by a happy face) and cool (represented by a stone) of ice). Although the indicators were no more than a joke, the users entertained the percentage changes and wondered about the anonymous vote. It was also possible to be f (represented by a star) of some.

7. Testimonial fight

Another very common practice on Orkut was the dispute over the top of the testimonials, a profile space reserved for friends to write tribute to the user. As someone left his message, the last friend's statement moved to the second position on the list. It then began a massive sending of texts (which sometimes did not even include tributes in its contents), generating a rivalry for the first place. The idea that the top contact would be the most beloved and dedicated friend.

Just add with scrap: To anyone who was part of Orkut, this phrase sounds quite familiar. This is because, for some users, a friend request was not enough to let a person be part of the network; it was necessary to send a scrap (or scrap) to the mural. There were websites that provided themed scraps and even allowed the creation of the animated image: the brighter the better!

Even before stalkear was a common practice on the Internet, Orkut already allowed its participants to check recent profile visitors. The appeal was a two-way street: those who deactivated it might gossip, but they would not know who visited their page.

10. Community I hate waking up early

Some say that one of the best things about Orkut was the communities. With a sleepy Garfield embossing the cover photo, the biggest one was called I hate getting up early and had over six million members in 2009. Community creator Joo Paulo Mascarenhas sold it in July of that year for $ 3. one thousand to five thousand reais.

Long before apps like Tinder existed, Orkut was helping to bring couples together. This is because each profile on the social network had an option called Crush list, which any user could click to show interest in the page owner. If the person returned the gesture, Orkut would send a message to both of them, confirming the match.

Ten years ago Orkut occupied the most popular social networking post in Brazil. At the same time, Facebook was gaining increasing popularity abroad. It would not be long before the scenario resulted in a feud between the sites: In 2009, Mark Zuckerberg began teaching his users how to find Orkut friends within Facebook in order to stimulate migration, and Google retaliated by changing its policies of data export.

In March 2009, the Discografias community, which had more than 921,000 members, was deactivated after several complaints and lawsuits involving copyright infringement. Group participants shared links to individual track downloads and full albums without any payment.

Rumors involving alleged premium versions of apps and social networks are common on the Internet. In 2010, inspired by the jokes with Facebook Gold, a student decided to invent the release of Orkut Gold. He created an album with blocked photos that could only be seen by anyone with the exclusive version of the social network. Turns out the joke has gone too far: many users believed and sent emails with personal data in exchange for the site upgrade, and criminals took advantage of the interest to apply scams.

15. Why is Orkut over?

Orkut's popularity in Brazil was not enough for Google to abandon the idea of discontinuing Orkut, announced in June 2014. Three months later, even under protests from some users, the social network was deactivated. The search giant has put forward justifying the success of other Internet products, such as YouTube, Blogger and Google+, at the time.

For Orkut's creator, however, the real reason is related to the evolution of social networks. "A lot has happened in the industry since the launch of orkut. Social Media is a constantly evolving industry. It is very important to always innovate and keep in touch with generations, usage patterns and sensitive community themes. Social networks that don't evolve over time they risk becoming outdated or irrelevant, "Bykkkten explained in an interview with dnetc.

Another reason given for Orkut's decline would be the consolidation of Facebook in Brazil. While Zuckerberg's social network invested in providing users with global connections to foreigners, as the network extended to many other countries, Orkut was only able to establish itself locally, limiting contact experiences.
