New MacBook Pro with Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Now Available for Purchase

Opinion: MacBook Pro is a professional machine again

Launched last July, the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar came full of expectations around its reliability, especially with regard to the keyboard and its "butterfly" mechanism, and also with regard to overall performance.

The machines have gained some new features already present in other Ma products, such as the T2 chip (present in the iMac Pro, for added security), as well as the third generation “butterfly” keyboard and a True Tone technology-supported display (which always shows the colors according to the environment where the user is). The new machines also come with faster, eighth generation Intel processors with four cores on 13 and six on 15 models.

Let's check the news and my evaluation of this new machine? The model I chose was 13 ″, with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM.

True Tone Supported Screen

Already present on iPads Pro and iPhones, displays supported by True Tone technology make the colors of your screen appear as they really are. Using a special sensor that analyzes ambient light, the screen adjusts the color and intensity to make everything look more natural.

Some people love the feature; For others, he's silly. Particularly, once you get used to the color balance offered by the feature, every time you look at a screen that does not have this technology, you see the colors pulling much more towards blue, making white “less white”.

This is undoubtedly the best screen ever made for an Apple notebook!

Performance and battery

In terms of performance, the gain was significant in both screen sizes. At 13, for the first time, we have four processing cores right in the input machines. Compared to a MacBook Pro 13 with the Touch Bar 2016, however, the only gain made in video rendering processes in Final Cut Pro / iMovie, as well as photo editing with applications that require a little more from the computer.

As for the battery, in my normal use (surfing the web and editing documents in Word), I get pretty close to the 10 hours Apple promised for the first time; That was one of the features (or improvements, you choose) that impressed me most about the model two years ago.

As could be no different, right after the release of the new MacBooks Pro, Apple has already engaged in a policy related to the new Core i9 processors (which, for the first time, are available as an option for the 15 model). Fortunately, because it was a software problem, everything was resolved after an update was released.

T2 chip

The first MacBooks Pro with Touch Bar were introduced in 2016 and, for the first time, now feature ARM processors. No, Apple has not stopped using Intel's as its main. This ARM chip was used as a coprocessor, called T1, which offered a Secure Enclave for your most sensitive information, from Touch ID identification capabilities to data on your credit cards used in Apple Pay.

With the T2 chip, the MacBook Pro now offers enhanced system security with support for secure boot and instant encrypted storage in addition to bringing the Siri feature to the Mac for the first time!

Although not a popular feature for people, the Siri command has been a hand in the wheel to find files on my Mac (looking for information and images that illustrate presentations I use at work). With the addition of the Home app (Home) For macOS Mojave 10.14, we still have the option of controlling the house through the MacBook is nothing better than having the option to do it by outsourcing this work to Siri, anyway ?! 😉

Memory and storage

In recent years, MacBooks Pro has been limited to 16GB of RAM because of the memory format used by Apple that requires a much more energy-efficient memory system that is not efficient enough for a notebook.

For the vast majority of users, 8GB is enough to say 16GB! But the big issue here is what MBP ought to be, as its name implies, a machine designed and designed for professionals who need something portable but at the same time very capable. With that in mind, Apple has decided to take advantage of the low power consumption of 15 ″ machines, enabling a 32GB option and at the same time slightly increasing the size of the battery to meet this higher consumption.

For RAM, we have as options:

  • 13 ″ MacBook ProInput: 8GB DDR4Custom: 16GB LPDDR3 ($ 1,400 more)
  • 15 ″ MacBook ProInput: 16GB DDR4Customizable: 32GB DDR4 (R $ 2,800 more)

As for storage, we have the following options:

  • 13 ″ MacBook ProInput: 256GB of customizable SSDP: 512GB ($ 1,600), 1TB ($ 4,800) or 2TB ($ 11,200)
  • 15 ″ MacBook ProInput: 256GB of customizable SSDP: 512GB (R $ 1,600), 1TB (R $ 4,800), 2TB (R $ 11,200) or 4TB (R $ 23,800)

That is, we have options for all types of users and pockets!

The keyboard politics

We don't have as controversial a subject as the butterfly keyboard on MacBooks Pro.

In this third generation model, Apple has added a new layer of silicone to the keyboard, which reduces noise and keeps dirt out. I can tell you that in this month of testing, the typing experience has become better in this new generation.

A few months ago, Apple announced a repair program for MacBooks and MacBooks Pro that had keyboard problems.

Apple's third generation butterfly keyboard keyboard

Some staff members of the had problems with the older generations of this keyboard. However, it is still a little too early to assess whether the third generation has actually corrected these problems and we hope that the problems faced by so many users have come to an end in this generation, although I doubt a little.

The new MacBook Pro is an amazing machine. The point that those of previous generations also are. Apple expects to further increase sales of its products with this updated machine, of course (mainly trying to fix the keyboard problem by offering more RAM and more processing power with the i9 chip). But at least here in Brazil, I still believe that we will have the MacBook Air as flagship for a long time, because of the values.

If you need a powerful machine for work, we can finally say after a while that the MacBook Pro is back to a professional level. If you need to upgrade your machine, this may be a good time because of the new processors, the amazing SSD read / write speed (the best in the market!), The True Tone technology-supported display, the even longer battery life. , the new keyboard and T2 chip, which make the new MacBook Pro the best portable computer ever made by the Cupertino firm.

Ah, if I can recommend something to you guys with iGadgets or new Macs: Buy AppleCare! Nothing like having an extended warranty for the great investment you have made! AppleCare's "plus" version, marketed in some countries such as the United States, has the same AppleCare + repair criteria for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watch (covering up to two accidental damages only for Macs for a period of time. of three years).

Be sure to think of it as a long term investment, even for a future resale! 😉
