"Ok, Google" doesn't work? Learn how to resolve this issue

The Google Assistant should help us in a futuristic utopia in which we carry our own assistants permanently available in our pockets. But instead, many Android users found that the feature ended up making them crazy who say the phrase "Ok Google" over and over on an unresponsive phone, no doubt paying some monkeys in the process.

But don't despair yet, there are some simple fixes that you can try that should make your voice recognition software work and keep your thumbs free from the risk of repetitive strain injury.

Check your language settings

If the Google Assistant is not responding to you, it may be because you are speaking the wrong language. US English will be the default language for many users, but it is still worth checking in the Settings area and changing as needed. To do this, go to the Google area in the settings, then go to Search> Voice> Languages, and then select the appropriate language (s) from the menu.

There you will see dozens of language options, each with a checkbox, so you can define the primary and secondary languages, if desired. Google will automatically detect the language you are speaking and switch between them automatically. To set a primary language, press and hold it.

It is good to know that speech recognition for languages other than English can sometimes be lower. Many commands do not work in Portuguese yet.

Updating your language pack can also solve your problem. In the same voice menu, go to Offline Speech Recognition and download or update your English (US) language pack.

Check the microphone on your device

As a voice-based system, Google Assistant relies on uninterrupted access to your smartphone's microphone. When you open the Google app, the microphone icon on the right side of the search bar should appear in bold, with fully formed lines. If you have a dotted line, you may have a problem with your microphone.

This can be caused by dirt in the small hole in the microphone, often found next to the loading door very carefully, clean it using a safety pin or something similar to clean it and often you will fix the problem . If that doesn't work, check the microphone settings in the Google app.

Occasionally, applications running in the background are emitting noises that can interfere with the microphone by picking up your voice, so check them out as well and close all that you think are making noise.

Disable S Voice or Bixby if you have a Samsung

Although there is no clear reason, it appears that the Google Assistant (and the old Google Now) are not always compatible with Bixby (or the older S Voice app) on Samsung smartphones.

If you have a Samsung with Bixby or S Voice installed and prefer to use Google's voice assistant, your best option is to completely disable Bixby or S Voice on your device. To do this, locate the application icon for S Voice, then press and hold for a while and select Disable.

For Bixby, activate it and click Full Screen. When the entire window appears, go to the gear icon and click on it, disabling Bixby in "Bixby Voice".

Delete the simplest actions

This may seem obvious, but Google Assistant needs mobile data or Wi-Fi to operate, so make sure your device is connected before attempting a search. Furthermore, and this is probably the oldest advice in the world, never too fast to do a reboot sometimes the magic really happens. Oh, and see if everything is up to date, especially the Google app.

Last but not least, make sure "Ok Google" detection is enabled. To do this, go to Settings> Google> Settings> Phone> Google Assistant. From there, activate the feature. See also in Settings> Google> Search> Voice> Voice Match> Access with Voice Match.

Retrain the "Ok Google" voice model

Sometimes, for unknown reasons, the Google Assistant does not retain the commands you gave. If all else fails, it may be time to retrain your digital companion. To do this, you need to open Settings> Google> Search> Voice> Voice Match, and then click Reset voice model.

Enter your password and you will be taken to the tutorial in which you again record the phrase "Ok Google" with your voice four times, as you did when you initially configured it.
