IPhones sales have been skating for some time, but we can’t say the same thing about Apple Watch: even though it has lost market, Apple’s smart watch has been gaining more and more followers around the world, as a new survey by Strategy Analytics.
According to the analyst firm, the smartwatch market as a whole grew an impressive 56% in 2018, totaling 45 million units sold. And Apple did its part, since Watch got 50% market share – even though Apple has lost market share, as in 2017 it dominated it completely with 60.4%.
The numbers, however, have grown. And the drop in market share by Apple does not in any way mean that the company has sold fewer devices – “just” that others have grown more. Neil Mawston, CEO of Strategy Analytics, said that Apple sold 9.2 million smartwatches in the fourth quarter of 2018, an increase of 18% compared to the 7.8 million units sold in the fourth quarter of 2017. In fact, the fourth quarter was a record high, with 18 million smart watches sold worldwide.
The loss of Apple’s market, however, was due to the strong growth of Fitbit (who did their homework and jumped from last place to second, overtaking Garmin and Samsung in the annual comparison).

Steven Waltzer, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, said the Galaxy Watch proved to be quite popular in North America and Asia, and Samsung promises in 2019 with a full line of news, including options with blood pressure monitoring.
Fitbit, in turn, proved to be quite popular in the United States, especially with Versa. The fact is that, together, Apple, Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin were responsible for 8 out of 10 smartwatches sold worldwide.
As we can see, after a great Apple Watch dynasty, the market is getting even. It now remains to be seen whether Apple will continue to lead the way with its watch or whether Samsung and the company (which adopt a different strategy and offer different device options) will take the biggest share for themselves, as is already the case in the smartphone market.
