NVIDIA confirms that Zune HD will use Tegra processor

During Computex, an electronics event held in Taip in June, NVIDIA employees confirmed that Microsoft will be the first company to use Tegra in a major product. They also said that she was largely responsible for the use of the term HD in the product name.

Microsoft Zune HD

The “all-in-one” processor offers hardware acceleration for 720 pixel video playback and consumes only 150mW of energy at full speed, giving the battery a similar autonomy to conventional players.

The Zune will likely be equipped with the APX 2500 or 2600 model, which combines an ARM11 processor with a GeForce-based GPU, in addition to memory controllers and the various outputs. Although the Zune HD has an OLED touchscreen with a resolution of only 480 Ă— 272 pixels, this Tegra design will allow the display of any H.264 video in high quality.

It also offers enough performance to display at 720 pixels, the maximum resolution when using an HDMI cable (which already comes with the Zune HD) for connection to a TV, and it also supports faster 3D rendering than its competitors.

For now, the Zune HD appears to be at an advantage over Apple's gadgets, since the iPhone and iPod touch only support a resolution of 640 Ă— 480 pixels when connected to a TV set by a component video cable. It is still unclear whether the iPhone 3G S, with the combination of ARM and PowerVR SGX processors, will offer video display at a higher resolution. J, we already know.
