As usual every year, Anacom has been sharing data on telecommunications services in Portugal in the past year, including on the Internet or optical fiber. In a year in which the number of subscribers to 4P and 5P service packages increased to 186 thousand, customers with TV subscriptions also grew, in this case by 3.7% compared to 2018,
In a statement, the National Communications Authority explains that the "growth in pay television service was due exclusively to offers supported on optical fiber", which is also on the rise in fixed broadband Internet access. In 2019, there was an increase of 285 thousand subscribers to television services in relation to the previous year, which translates into a growth of 17.5%.
Since the first quarter of 2018, the main form of access to the subscription television service, optical fiber, reached around 1.9 million subscribers at the end of 2019, which corresponds to 46.9% in total. This is followed by cable TV, with around 1.3 million subscribers (32.7%), satellite technology (DTH) with 464 thousand (11.4%), and ADSL, which registered 370 thousand customers (9.1%).
