Apple vs. Nokia, Research In Motion and Motorola: this is how the dispute over the standard future of Nano-SIM cards could be defined. The companies were fighting to decide which will be the winning proposal and, while Apple proposed a backwards compatible model, Nokia / RIM / Motorola presented something new, close to the design of a microSD.
Ma's design went through modifications, since it violated one of the requirements of the new standard. As Apple has the support of several operators (AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Gemalto, Telecom Italia, Telefnica, Verizon, Vodafone, among others), everything indicated that it would win the vote of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, or ETSI), which was postponed precisely by the fight between the manufacturers.
Today, Apple's rivals have presented a new proposal, which is practically a mixture of the designs previously presented by Ma and the trio, taking into consideration the Cupertino firm's proposal. The new design maintains the backward compatibility desired by Apple and operators, while it can also be used as a kind of microSD, that is, with dedicated space, without the need for a “tray” (press to attach and press again to release).
The next ETSI meeting will take place on May 31 in Japan (Osaka), when we will probably have the result of the vote and will know the winning proposal.
