Another day, another wave of news from Apple TV +! Come on?
According to deadline, Apple closed the biggest film festival acquisition deal in history by acquiring the rights to «Emancipation» (“Emancipation”).
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and starring Will Smith (“Aladdin”), is a thriller action (scripted by Willam N. Collage) on the terrible escape of Peter, a slave who escapes from hunters and the relentless swamps of Louisiana on a tortuous journey north, where he joined the Union Army.
Seven competitors competed for the film, and sources say Apple will spend about $ 120 million for production. The film is expected to hit theaters in early 2021 and then, as expected, go straight to Apple TV +.
Apple also released the documentary trailer «Boys State», which follows a group of young people from Texas as they participate in a “political camp” – a local tradition where young people organize themselves into parties and governments to simulate the real administration of a state.
The idea is to teach values of democracy and government to teenagers. Check it out:
The film, directed by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, will arrive on Apple TV + on August 14. It sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
Contract with Mark Bomback
Meanwhile, the deadline reported that Apple has signed an exclusivity agreement with Mark Bomback, screenwriter and showrunner in «Defending Jacob».
In the contract, which spans several years, Bomback will develop new television projects exclusively for the Apple TV + – with this, he joins the select group of creators with exclusive agreements with the platform, including Annie Weisman (from the still unpublished «Physical») and Lee Eisenberg (from «Little America»).
Apple, as usual, did not release audience figures for «Defending Jacob», but the contract shows that, at the very least, Apple really liked Bomback’s work – and other estimates show that his series was extremely successful on the platform. Did you enjoy it?
Michelle Lee Promotion
Finally, a promotion: the deadline also reported that Michelle Lee and now home programming director Apple TV +.
The executive joined Apple in 2017 and has since played the role of senior creative director – in office, she oversaw the creation of series as «The Morning Show» and «Little America».
Now, Lee will continue to oversee the future seasons of the series, but will add other productions to his wing – among them, «Pachinko», “Mr. Corman ”, the aforementioned «Physical», and the still unnamed spy series starring Brie Larson. Good winds for her, therefore!
