Here we deal with the main news brought by the new MacBook Air, released the day before yesterday; at the time of that post, however, there was still no more detailed information on the performance of Apple's newest laptop, nothing but at least the generic promises provided by Ma herself.
Now this has been duly corrected: Jason Snell, from Six Colors, already put hands on a copy of the new MacBook Air and ran some benchmarks in the beauty so that we have some idea of what awaits us.
The model obtained by Snell was the intermediate one, equipped with a processor Intel Core i5 quad-core 1.1GHz the one that sold for US $ 1,300 in the USA, or R $ 13,300 in Brazil. And the news is, in general, good: comparing the new machine with the MacBook Air 2018 (which was also equipped with a Core i5 chip, but dual-core 1.6GHz), the performance gains are significant.
In the Geekbench 5 single core test, the new Air won 1,047 points, against 790 of its predecessor; for comparison, the MacBook Retina (2017, with Core m3 processor) scored 728 points in the same test, while a 2013 MacBook Air model (with Core i7 processor) scored 565 points.
The higher the bar, the betterIn the multiple-core test, the difference was even greater: the new model 2,658 points 76% more than the 2018 Air, which obtained 1,628. The MacBook Retina had 1,535 points, while the 2013 MacBook Air scored 1,278.
However, it is worth noting how advanced Apple is in producing its own processors. Snell decided to compare the new MacBook Air with a iPad Pro 2018 (he still couldn't get his hands on the new model), equipped with A12X Bionic chip and surprise: Ma's tablet outperformed the Mac in both single and multi-core measurements:
The higher the bar, the betterCertainly, the differences will be even greater when compared to the new iPad Pro, with A12Z Bionic chip. In other words, is the decisive moment coming when the iPad will become a better option for most basic computer users? This is a discussion that goes (and comes from) far, and there will certainly be a fierce defense on both sides.
