Netflix May Cancel Password Sharing Accounts | Audio and Video

Netflix has admitted that it monitors accounts that have passwords possibly shared with people who do not live in the same house. In an investor interview last week, product director Greg Peters said he had no plans to disclose at the moment, but ensured that the company is monitoring (users sharing the login), analyzing the situation and seeing consumer-friendly ways to trim the edges of the problem.

According to a survey by market research firm Magid, about 9% of users share their accounts with friends and family. In addition, the rate of password sharing increases among younger users. Netflix allows you to create different profiles on the same account as long as everyone lives in the same house.

Using the same login multiple times is seen as a barrier to the growth of the platform's subscriber base. A survey by market research firm Magid indicates that 9% of users share their accounts with friends and family. In addition, 35% of generation users millennial disclose your password to friends to use the service without signing it properly. The number is smaller as the account owner's age increases.

The estimated login share is equivalent to $ 155 million in subscription value. The difficulty in tackling the problem is in differentiating when a new login is performed by the account owner on a different device or location, or when a friend borrows the password. The company is therefore investigating a way to track fraudulent accounts without interfering with legitimate use of the subscription.

Netflix now allows you to create multiple profiles on the same account as long as they are used by people residing in the same place. The only limitation is related to the number of screens that can be played simultaneously, according to the plan: one at a time in the Basic plan, which costs R $ 21.90; two simultaneously in the Standard, for the price of R $ 32,90; and up to four at the same time in Premium, which has a monthly fee of R $ 45,90.
