Netflix app no longer supports AirPlay [atualizado: “justificativa”]

The technology Airplay Great. With it we can share videos, photos, music and more from Apple devices to Apple TV, favorite speakers and soon some models of Smart TVs. An app that is important in this scenario, however, has just abandoned this technology. I speak of Netflix.

In a support article explaining how to use a mobile device to watch Netflix on TV, the company withdrew AirPlay as one of the available options for Apple devices. The justification? In the words of Netflix, “Technical limitations”.

The loss in the huge as there are Netflix apps for everything that device, including Apple TV, consoles, smart TVs, etc. With this offering, the real need to use AirPlay to enjoy content eventually becomes quite remote. Still, there are cases where this could be justified, for example in a scenario where you are at the home of a friend who is not a subscriber to the service and wants to play the content of your device on his TV using Apple TV.

Of course you can ask him to download the app on Apple TV and sign in with his credentials, but the convenience of simply playing the video from your iPhone to the TV was good, there's no denying it.

Please note that sharing Netflix content with a TV is still possible as long as it has a built-in Chromecast (some Philips, Polaroid, Sharp, Skyworth, Soniq, Sony, Toshiba and Vizio TV models) .

Streaming a Netflix app content to a TV being the Streaming a Netflix app content to a TV being Cast

There is also the option of the “Cast” feature, this icon (Cast) which appears in the upper left corner of the screen, which lets you stream content to some models of TVs, or connect your iPhone / iPad / iPod touch TV via cable (which is definitely not pleasant and requires an adapter) .

Of course, trying to mirror the iPhone / iPad screen on the TV through Control Center doesn't work with the Netflix app either. Are we facing a real technical limitation or another attempt by Netflix to protect its content?

A Netflix representative confirmed to the The verge that the appeal was even discontinued, with a somewhat odd justification:

We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on whatever device they use. With AirPlay support coming out for third party devices, there's no way for us to distinguish between devices (which an Apple vs. what not) and guarantee these experiences. As such, we have decided to discontinue AirPlay support on Netflix to ensure that the viewing quality standard is met. Members can continue to access Netflix through the built-in app on Apple TV and other devices.

As far as I know, the AirPlay protocol is just about ensuring the quality and proper format for displaying Netflix content on every device it runs on. The thing had been working fine for years, thanks.

There would be no reason for Netflix to worry about it, especially because the experience with its app is still the same for the iPhone / iPad that would be sending content via AirPlay. And if he had to worry, it was no more than their obligation; they who simply chose to ignore it.

Sounds to me honestly like some kind of “retaliation” for Ma's entry into the streaming of videos with the Apple TV +.
