Myths and Truths about Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram Integration | Social networks

The bet came after the acquisition of the social network of photos and videos in 2012 and the messenger in 2014. It is estimated that, initially, about 2.6 million users will enjoy this integration. Following a string of scandals about the leakage of Facebook account information to Cambridge Analytica in 2016, the move aims to restore users' confidence. So far, there is no forecast for integration to be launched. Zuckerberg stated that this is a long term investment and will not arrive before 2020. To find out more details on the subject, the dnetc prepared a list of myths and the truths of integration that will impact digital communication services.

1. Will my conversations be shared between apps?

Myth. Only conversationalists can see messages on platforms, available for Android and iPhone (iOS). They are also able to forward the content in chat, which already happens in WhatsApp. The privacy of conversations remains guaranteed against leaks and unauthorized access by third parties. The main purpose of the convergence of services is to allow the exchange of messages between the chats of each platform: Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.

2. Will I have to sign up for all apps?

Myth. The integration is intended to facilitate contact and, therefore, does not require the user to have individual records on each platform, as is currently the case. To continue messaging with any of the apps, the user may only have one account. This will not interfere with conversations with contacts by other integration applications. The change also does not require changing apps each time you reply or send messages, for example.

3. Will all outgoing messages have end-to-end encryption?

Truth. This is a key reason for the integration to be implemented, according to Zuckerberg. At the moment, the only messenger that offers end-to-end encryption is WhatsApp. The goal is to use this security technology also in messages sent by Facebook or Instagram. Developers claim to strengthen and increase users' privacy as this method prevents third parties from intercepting the content. The measure limits access to chat members only.

4. Can I send SMS to app chats?

Truth. The news seeks to expand the usability of the service and attract more users, especially in the United States, where SMS is used as often as messaging software. At this time, only Google OS devices will have the functionality. There is no indication that this service will have the same charge as the mobile operators.

5. Will messages be stored for a limited time?

Truth. In efforts to ensure more data protection, the integration aims to determine an expiration time for conversations to remain available, just as Instagram's Stories do. According to Zuckerberg's design, the limit may be one month or one year for automatic expiration, depending on the configuration chosen by the user. If they want to store conversations permanently, they can use a backup system available for both Google and Apple operating systems. The feature can be enabled in WhatsApp, it is not known if there is compatibility in other apps.

6. Will the functions of all apps be merged?

Myth. There will be no fusion of the features of the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp trio. The integration promises contact list access of each application for the user of any of the services that represents a navigation feature included in the convergence of platforms. So far, the only time zone is limited to messaging between apps.

7. The news to be launched in 2020?

Maybe yes. Integration may be completed and released in early 2020, but there is no official confirmation from the company. Meanwhile, rumors have raised suspicions that possible testing of the new feature would have caused a general crash on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram in March.

The failure caused instability in sharing media in audio messenger, photos and images; obstacles in Facebook posts and comments; as well as Instagram flaws that prevented Direct from posting and Stories to post. However, according to Facebook's official explanation, the reason for the instability was a misconfiguration on their servers and this would have caused the platforms to crash or become unstable.

It is noteworthy that the problem with the instant messaging application has gained advantages for rival Telegram, which has gained about three million new users in 24 hours. The number was released by Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov. The executive stressed that the app delivers "real privacy and unlimited space for everyone". The statement was pointed out by the foreign press as a provocation to the competitor.
