The registration of Internet addresses under the Top Level Domain (TLD) .mobi will be possible from next June, in a first phase only for holders of trademarks or rights, in a period known as Sunrise, and only later in September, opening to the general register.

As indicated by the Mobile Top Level Domain (mTLD), the consortium that manages the new domain, the usual «Sunrise» period will be preceded by another exceptional registration phase called «Limited Industry Sunrise», specifically designed to the mobile communications industry.

Approved last July by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the .mobi domain was an old claim of entities and companies linked to the area of mobile technologies, such as the GSM Association, Ericsson, Nokia, Telefónica Móviles, Microsoft , Samsung, T-Mobile and Vodafone, which formed a joint venture, with the aim of encouraging the creation of web pages specially designed for the sector.

According to the managing consortium of the new domain, .mobi also represents an opportunity for content providers and software companies for mobile terminals to extend Internet-based services to the portable market.
