ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has endorsed yet another sponsored top-level domain, .mobi, dedicated to aggregating information for mobile devices. The new domain should be operational in 2006, being managed by the mTLD Top Level Domain, which brings together several companies in the area, such as Nokia, Ericsson or Microsoft.

Vincent Cerf, president of ICANN, said at a conference that the approval of this new address guarantees a new potential for the industry, both in terms of publicizing its services and developing new potential, such as the use of equipment location information to provide relevant information for the user, quotes the international press

The «mobi» domain is an old claim by mobile operators and manufacturers, such as the GSM Association, Ericsson, Nokia, Telefónica Móviles, Microsoft, Samsung, T-Mobile and Vodafone, which formed a joint venture, with the aim of encouraging the creation of web pages specially designed for the sector.

According to the managing consortium of the new domain, .mobi also represents an opportunity for content providers and software companies for mobile terminals to extend Internet-based services to the portable market.

Last month, ICANN approved the address «.xxx», a specific domain for adult content on the Internet, which aims to organize the pornography industry. Before, «.jobs», «.travel» and «.eu», Internet domain applicable to the European Union space, had been approved.
