Misunderstanding between teams secures Apple's project to build its own cloud infrastructure

The large data centers that Apple already owns are mostly dedicated to the content of streaming and media distribution. This means that many services iCloud they are still outsourced, using infrastructures from Amazon, Google and Microsoft as we explained here.

With the intention of loosening the bonds of these services, Ma has been working on what was called internally "McQueen Project". The creation of your own cloud infrastructure aims to promote stability improvements in iCloud and other Apple applications, as well as to strengthen the security of your data. Despite the good intentions, it seems that the company needs to deal with some disagreements and dropouts in this migration process.

The plans would be to make the infrastructure that Crab already owns and extends it to other services. However, from anonymous reports, the The Information explained (closed matter for subscribers) that this partnership may not have been received in the best way. This is because the expansion of the group responsible for Siri led by Patrick Gates may threaten the existence of the group responsible for iCloud (composed of supervisor Eric Billingsley and more than 1,000 engineers), which would eventually be considered “unnecessary and irrelevant”.

After some heated discussions between both groups, including childish “who's better than who” disputes, a sailor has already jumped off the boat. This was Steve DAurora, an engineering manager recruited by Apple during the company's acquisition of Siri in 2010.

Despite the leaps and bounds, Ma still expects its project to be ready by mid-2017, with the first batch of applications / services possibly being Game Center, CloudKit and Apple Maps.
