Microsoft starts testing a new version of Skype for the web

cone - Skype for Mac

Years ago Skype a multiplatform communicator, running on Macs, PCs, smartphones, tablets, consoles, etc. But now Microsoft wants to go further, placing it directly in the browser.

The company today announced the availability of the first beta version of Skype for Web, accessible directly from skype.com. For now only a few users have access to it, but Microsoft expects to release it to everyone in the world in the coming months.

The idea is that the thing will work in a very simple and direct way, but at least for the time being as soon as it is. To start with, it requires the installation of a small plugin to work. Microsoft is working to enable Real-Time Communications (RTC) on Skype for Web, but that still takes a while according to her. In addition, browser support is limited: on Macs, Skype for Web is only working for now on Safari 6 or higher and still consuming a lot of battery. It also remains to be seen whether the quality of video calls over the web will be matched with that offered today by native apps.

The promise is good and shows that Microsoft is willing to fight more and more head-on with Google on the web, but for me it was a little disappointing the way it was presented today. Let the thing evolve faster than expected
