Behold, Active Storage revealed the mysterious product that appeared on the teaser launched three days ago: it is ActiveSAN, a device compatible with Xsan and StorNext networks, in addition to being friendly to installations that make use of discontinued Xserves.
ActiveSAN is 1U in size and uses Xeon processors, with redundant sources and up to 8GB of RAM, in addition to a design that facilitates the maintenance and replacement of parts. Contrary to what some speculations have proposed, it does not use Mac OS X Server, but a Linux-based solution which, come and go, almost the standard of excellence in terms of servers. More information about ActiveSAN, such as price and sales start date, should arrive in April, during NAB 2011.
Although there has been no statement from Apple regarding this announcement, some people say that Ma customers interested in servers would have been discreetly referred to Active Storage for some time.
