MCE offers OptiBay, secondary hard drive for new MacBooks and MacBooks Pro

MCE Technologies today announced the availability of OptiBay hard drives for the new MacBooks and MacBooks Pro unibody (both 15 and 17 inches, in addition to PowerBooks G4). Models range from 250 to 500GB all with buffer 8MB and replace the optical drive of the machine (like SuperDrive).

The 350 and 500GB hard drives run at 5,400RPM, while the 320GB model is offered in a 7,200RPM version. According to the company, its drives consume less than traditional ones, contributing to a 10-15% increase in the battery life of laptops. In addition, they support S.M.A.R.T. and Mac OS X spin reduction commands, which can be used as a way to obtain additional space or in RAID mode.

The prices for OptiBay hard drives start at $ 190, an optional case can be used to convert the existing drive to an external device via the USB 2.0 interface. In addition, MCE offers an OptiBay kit for MacBooks and MacBooks Pro for $ 130, making it possible to use any conventional 2.5-inch SATA HDD. With this, it is possible to reach up to 1TB of internal storage in the machines.
