It is common to see Linux distributions based on others. Ubuntu, the most popular of all and based on Debian, has spawned other distros like Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu. Thinking of proposing a lightweight and functional system, ideal for simpler computers with older hardware, a group of developers created Lubuntu.The system is now recognized by Canonical, the foundation that maintains Ubuntu, joining the official family of derivatives of the distribution created by Mark Shuttleworth. Lubuntu's main focus will be an alternative for those who do not have a PC capable of running the latest versions of major systems, but do not want to compromise on the security and functionality of the distro. 
LXDE in place of Gnome
The first big difference between Lubuntu and Ubuntu is the desktop environment. While it uses Gnome (and Unity since its last release), it works with LXDE. The main feature of LXDE is precisely working well on low performance machines such as netbooks and older computers.
Equal but different
Lubuntu is basically the same as Ubuntu. The way you work and set up basically the same, the differences are more in the graphic aspect. This distribution looks more like Windows systems, with the desktop taskbar located just at the bottom of the screen, leaving aside the two characteristic Ubuntu panels until version 10.10.If you have used Ubuntu, you will probably do well in Lubuntu. If you haven't ventured into any distro of Linux yet, this is a good gateway. As usual on Linux systems, you can customize the interface as desired. Choose from new cone and window themes, wallpapers, fonts, and more.
Ready to use
Lubuntu comes ready to use and has dozens of applications already installed: Firefox and Chromium to surf the Internet; AbiWord for word processing and Gnumeric for spreadsheet creation; MPlayer to watch your favorite videos and Audacious to listen to music; Transmission to download torrents; Xfburn to record discs; calculator, Synaptic package manager and more.
