The racing FPV drones (First Person Vision) is a sport that has been gaining public and popularity in recent years. However, it seems that it is not enough, as the next step for this niche can be drone battles.
Jason Koebler, from Vice, went to visit the drone manufacturers Andy Shen and Ryan Gury, and the two are already enjoying "amateur" battles. The idea is that a pilot equips his FPV drone with some type of ammunition, like Nerf "toy" bullets, and flies down a course while trying to shoot other ships in the air. Shen started developing this last year, after mounting a Nerf gun on a drone.
According to the two engineers presented, adding combat to drone racing introduces a new layer of complexity, making events more challenging and fun. In addition, this would be one of the only sports in which it is possible to implement combat in the air safely.
The spacecraft had a battery life to fly for about three to five minutes
As the DroneDJ currently mentions the battle scenario similar to the start of drone racing: "friends getting together, building their own drones, flying and having fun". However, with the popularization and strengthening of races, together with the advancement of small and large unmanned ships, it is quite possible that, in some years, we will have official championships and battle drones gaining space in the market.
