LG Display is not meeting the demand for iPad screens

Kwon Young-soo, CEO of LG DIsplay, said yesterday that his company is working at full throttle, but that it still cannot handle all the demand for LCD screens for the iPad. No panic, however: he guarantees that in the second quarter of 2011 everything will be normalized.

Wait, 2011 ?! Okay, you can panic!

“Demand (from Apple) continues to increase and we are unable to fully meet it. Apple may have to postpone the launch of the iPad in some countries because of the limited supply of components on demand, ”said Young-soo. "We are considering additions to the iPad product lines, but supply is likely to remain limited until the beginning of next year."

US $ 512 million will be invested in the creation of a new assembly line for screens for iPads and similar mobile products, but it should be ready by the end of next year. Once ready, it can produce about 20,000 screens per month.

At the same time, LG Display is facing a drop in orders for panels for TVs, something that should only be reversed in September. I imagine that adapting the production lines for big screens to handle Apple's orders is not viable: a pity.
