Long before the Apple Watch even hit the market, Apple had already announced that it would not open its sales numbers for strategic / marketing reasons. So, all we have today are mere estimates with the exception of a “tip” recently given by Tim Cook.
Yesterday, the research firm Strategy Analytics released figures on the global watch market and revealed that, for the first time, smartwatches surpassed sales of swiss watches in the fourth quarter of 2015: 8.1 against 7.9 million whereas a year earlier the numbers were respectively only 1.9 against 8.3 million.
The interesting thing that, although smartwatches have fired almost 316% in one year, sales of Swiss watches were only 4.8%. That is, it shows that the audiences of the two types of watches are either different or people simply buy / have both.
Also according to Strategy Analytics, the Apple Watch would have captured 63% of market share global smartwatches in the period. That is, they estimate that Ma would have sold, in the fourth quarter of 2015, about 5.1 million of watches. Samsung appears in second place, with 16% (~ 1.3 million units sold).
