Any user who owns an iPhone and activates the service iMessage is able to receive messages from other Apple users directly to your phone number, without either party paying anything. It is a free replacement for SMS, which works over the internet.
This is very practical and very cool, but what if you give up on Apple and go to another platform, like Windows Phone or Android? Well, if you don’t unsubscribe from your phone number in iMessage, you could be in trouble. Any SMS messages that your friends who still have an iPhone, iPad or Mac will send you will not reach you, because the Apple system will continue to consider that number as an iMessage and will only send it over the internet and not via SMS. Since other platforms are not compatible with iMessage, the message is lost in the cosmos.
But to resolve the issue, Apple has made available an online tool that allows you to unsubscribe even if you no longer have any Apple devices.
There are two ways to get your iMessage number:
1. If you still have an iPhone
If you still have an iPhone available, follow the steps below:
2. If you don’t have an iPhone anymore
Well, if you no longer have an iPhone to unsubscribe your number, you will have to visit the Apple website to do so. Go to this link, enter your current mobile number (the one where you are having trouble receiving messages from friends using iOS) and wait for a code, which will come by message. Enter the code to confirm that that number is really yours and that’s it, from there you will receive SMS from your friends who still have an iPhone. ?
