YouTube Video Copyright

It is important to always be aware of the rights to use a video when sharing it. After all, publishing the protected content of others without your permission may be considered a criminal offense.

In its Help Center, YouTube explains some cases. The service reports that in many countries, "when a person creates an original work that is displayed in a physical medium, they automatically own the copyright to the work."

This means that only she can use the material or tell who can use it as well. The platform further explains that there are cases called Acceptable Use. That is, those in which it is possible to use a content without the prior permission of the author.

In the United States, reproducing works of commentary, analysis, research, teaching, or reporting may be considered acceptable by the authorities. They may also be so when used for non-commercial purposes and if reproduction is for educational purposes.

Still according to YouTube, if the material is factual and not purely fictional increases the chances of having its use as justifiable. The platform also lists the myths of acceptable use. Just them:

  • "If I credit the copyright owner, my use will be considered acceptable automatically";
  • "Uses for 'entertainment' or 'non-profit' are automatically acceptable";
  • "If I add original materials created by me to someone else's copyrighted work, my use will be acceptable."

Detailed explanations of the Acceptable Use issue of third party work can be found on the What Acceptable Use? Page created by YouTube itself. Remember that each country has its own legislation, which must be respected.
