Learn how to enable parental control on iOS and better understand how it works

It is essential to understand that children are increasingly adapted to technologies and not the young age that prevents small children from carrying out some actions that many adults feel difficult. So, thinking about the safety and tranquility of the whole family, Apple has in its operating systems some options for parental controls.

On iOS, this control is done through the “Restries” feature. Understand better below how it works.

How to enable restrictions on iOS

  1. To enable restrictions on iPhones / iPads, go to General Settings Restries;
  2. Tap on “Activate Restries”;
  3. Create an access code (it will be requested every time you access the resource).

important do not lose the access code restrictions. If you forget it, you will need to erase all content on the iPhone to create a new combination. Recovering the device from a backup also does not allow the code to be recovered, so stay tuned!

Controlling app downloads and in-store purchases

Once the feature is activated, it is possible to see a series of applications and native system features that are likely to be marked as allowed, including Safari, Camera, Siri and Dictation, FaceTime, AirDrop, CarPlay, etc. If it is not interesting for the child to have access to any of these apps / resources, just uncheck them in this list.

Such an app / function will only be disabled, and not deleted from the iPhone / iPad. In other words, applications cannot be accessed through the device's Home Screen and any activity that requires the use of the inhibited app will not be allowed.

Other apps / features that can be disabled on iOS include:

  • iTunes Store
  • Profiles and Publications (on Apple Music)
  • iBooks Store
  • Podcasts
  • Install Apps
  • Delete Apps
  • In-App Purchases

IOS restrictions

The "In-App Purchases" is an alternative to the "Ask to Buy" function, which exists within Family Sharing, in which children under 13 need to have an Apple ID for special (which is not as complete as traditional). Another option, if you do not want to disable internal purchases completely, always require a password (it will be necessary to disable the Touch ID / Face ID option for the iTunes Store) every time a content download is initiated.

How to restrict which sites can be visited

Back to restrictions, another security guarantee is given by the function that limits the online content accessed by Safari. You can add specific sites or use the option to limit adult content through Apple's content filters. To do this, go to General Site Restries Settings and choose the desired option.

How to restrict content type by age

You can also decide what type of content can be consumed on the iPhone / iPad by setting restrictions for each type of media: music, podcasts, news, movies, TV shows, books, apps, etc. This means that you can, for example, only allow films with a certain indicative rating to be downloaded on the device.

How to control privacy settings

To prevent your child from accessing device features (such as location, camera and microphone) on certain websites or applications, you can simply inhibit access to those functions. There are several resources that must be analyzed by the person in charge, including privacy adjustments and others.

  • Location Services: block settings to allow apps and websites to use your location;
  • Contacts: prevent apps from using your contacts' information;
  • Calendar: prevent apps from using your calendar information;
  • Reminders: Prevent apps from using your reminder information;
  • Photos: prevent apps from requesting access to your photos;
  • Share Location: prevents your location from being shared on the Messages app and on Search My Friends;
  • Among other options.

It is good to remember that if any function or application of the device cannot be accessed, it is probably due to restrictions. If so, just re-enable access to that resource for it to function normally.

How to control changes in device settings

You can also restrict your child to change the settings of the account registered on the device, cellular data, update in the background, limit the volume set and more!

It is worth visiting the many options that are available in the Restrictions area, without a doubt something there will be useful for you to make your child's iPhone / iPad more in line with your family's usage philosophy. 😊
