LaCie unveils dual RAID drive with USB 3.0

Mac Pro with LaCie 2BigIn collaboration with Symwave, LaCie yesterday unveiled a new version of its dual drive 2Big, supporting the new (and fast) USB 3.0 connection. According to the company, the new standard grants the accessory a writing speed of up to 275MB per second, with the help of a link between SATA and RAID controllers.

The only negative issue with this product is the fact that the new connection is not yet compatible with Macs, something that does not depend directly on LaCie, but on Apple. While the new USB 3.0 standard has started to walk slowly between conventional PCs, there is no prediction of when we will see USB 3.0 on Apple computers even in the form of an expansion card for Macs Pro.

The high performance of the new 2Big and its capacity (up to 4TB) are factors that are very pleasing to professional users, especially those who work intensively with high definition video. Although its USB 3.0 connection will not operate on Macs, LaCie guarantees that it will make all of its products based on the new standard compatible with them.

The new 2Big will start shipping to the first buyers in early 2010. More details on it will be on CES (Consumer Electronics Show) next year, which will be held in the first weeks of January.
