It's not just smartphones: notebook catches fire while charging

On smartphones: notebook catches fire while charging

We have heard several cases of smartphones that caught fire while they were charging or simply standing on the table. However, the most recent story is different, given that the cause of the fire was a notebook.

We know that the processors that are inserted into these devices produce heat while they are "working". For this reason, these machines have fans and air vents to keep the temperature within the normal range. In the manual provided by the manufacturer, there is a warning saying not to cover the air vents or use the notebook on top of pillows or covers, for example.

Typically, when the system detects an overheat, the notebook shuts down on its own to prevent damage to the hardware. In some cases, it is possible that the processor or other important component will be damaged, but there is always a risk of bigger problems, and this was the case for the notebook of Sabrina Ruelland, a resident of Onshawa, in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Sabrina shows the damage in her room after the fire

While dining with his daughter, his apartment's fire alarm went off. Initially, the woman did not notice any kind of smoke or flames, but when she looked under her bedroom door, she saw a big "red glow". When the door was opened, Sabrina found that the wall, the floor and the table were on fire.

According to Derrick Clark, the city's fire chief, the fire was caused because the device was on a towel. "The notebook was on flammable material, and when the machine reached a certain temperature, it was enough to light the fire," he said. "It doesn't matter if a notebook or cell phone. The batteries generate heat during operation, especially when they are charging," he concluded.

So the alert is: never leave your notebook carrying on surfaces that can disturb the air outlet, after all, no one wants to go through situations like this.
