Whenever new iPhones are released, little by little, new details emerge that Apple chooses not to advertise openly on its website or much less mention in the keynote the majority, of course, because they are not so relevant to the general public.
And one of those about the iPhones Xs, Xs Max and Xr: they will be able to read tags NFC in background, even without a specific app for this to be running at the moment.
Very nice, the new iPhone lineup supports background NFC tag communication which can wake up your iOS app! https://t.co/oi03axrKnE pic.twitter/pz7yCB481p

In short, it means that with new iPhones users will be able to bring them closer to an NFC terminal if the screen is on (locked or not) and something happens on the device automatically including iOS suggesting opening an app via an alert or notification.
Developers interested in the novelty can check details on the video “What’s New in Core NFC”, posted on the Apple Developer portal.
