We have already had some articles here on the commercial performance of iPhones in recent times: in one of them, we analyzed the influence of new models on the general sale of Apple smartphones, and in another, we talked about the performance of devices in different markets. On the other hand, we have not yet seen a general survey on sales of the handsets compared to the rest of the market.
This is exactly what three research firms recently did: Canalys, a IHS Markit and the Strategy Analytics. The numbers vary slightly between them (not least because Apple and several of the manufacturers do not release official sales figures), but there is a consensus: the smartphone market as a whole is seeing signs of revitalization, while Apple lost ground.
Canalys has the most pessimistic estimates for Cupertino. According to the firm, sales of iPhones dropped 7% in the third quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year – in the last period, 43.5 million dispatched devices, against 46.9 million in 2018.
Overall, the biggest contributors to the growth of the smartphone market were the leader Samsung (with a jump of 11%) and the runner-up Huawei, which, despite all the controversy surrounding Google and the United States government, grew an excellent 29% – which shows the power of the Chinese consumer market in this whole story. According to Canalys, the segment as a whole grew 1% year on year comparison – a sign of life in a market that has been stagnating (or falling) for more than two years.
In the analysis by Strategy Analytics and IHS Markit, Apple fell 3% and 2.1%, respectively. All analytics companies, however, agree on one point: Apple is expected to catch its breath in the last quarter, as the new iPhones are succeeding in the task of attracting public attention again – especially the iPhone 11, with a $ 50 reduction in its introductory price compared to its predecessor.
So, let’s see how this whole story will look in a few months.
