iPhones 8, 8 Plus and X support the new generation of high definition voice calling, EVS

In 2014, Apple brought the iPhone 6 and, with it, the HD voice feature to the world, using LTE quality to make better calls. The technology was called Come back (Voice Over Long-Term Evolution).

As this type of feature is very dependent on the operators, it was expected that it would not arrive so early here in Brazil and that is what actually happened. To our delight (at least from her customers), TIM has started to make VoLTE available in 21 Brazilian cities (including So Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Braslia, Fortaleza, Macei, Recife, etc.), with a forecast of reaching more than 1,000 municipalities by the end of the year.

To enjoy this feature, your device must be iPhone 6 or later (including iPhone SE) and have iOS 11 installed. So just enable the option in Cellular Settings Opes Data Cellular Activate 4G Voice and Data.

While Brazil is adapting only now to a technology of three years ago, Apple launched with the new iPhones (8, 8 Plus and X) the new generation of HD voice calling: Enhanced Voice Services (EVS).

In an interview for the Engadget Japan, KDDI operator president Takashi Tanaka has confirmed that the new handsets support the new generation of HD voice calling. EVS allows for much higher quality connection and closer real communication, using a frequency range of 50Hz to 14.4kHz (far higher than the VoLTE standard, which is only 50Hz to 7kHz).

For now, only British carrier EE has support for what they call Enhanced HD Voice on iPhones 8/8 Plus (most likely it's the same feature, just with a new name). In the United States, as technology has been around for a while, most carriers will probably support it on new handsets. It's in Brazil? Well, who knows three more years from now? 😝
