Interest in AR startups revives “Apple Glass” rumors

THE Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 It's over, but that doesn't mean it is no longer the stage for Apple related news. This time, everything indicates that the Cupertino giant was actually present at the event from a group of engineers and employees interested in augmented reality technologies, as reported by AppleInsider.

According to people who followed the movement, more than six anonymous Apple representatives, including Ma subsidiary employees, visited startups specialized in waveguides during CES. These companies include DigiLens, Lumus, Vuzix and WaveOptics.

The waveguides are used in AR glasses as a means of transporting the graphic information from the source to the displays positioned in front of the user's eyes. THE startup Magic Leap, for example, uses technology in its headset reality show launched last year.

Although Apple has not officially commented on the meetings with the aforementioned companies, we know that the company has been interested in AR / VR technologies for years, with several employees hired in the area. Even the company's CEO, Tim Cook, already referred to an augmented reality device stating that, at that time, Apple did not have “the technology itself to do this with quality”.

Since then, both Apple's technology and tests involving AR products are likely to have increased mainly after the acquisition of Akonia Holographics, which specializes in lenses for AR glasses. Nevertheless, the company is still “on schedule” suggested by the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo for the launch of the highly speculated "Apple Glass".
