Intel Launches New Line of Six-Core Xeon Processors

Intel today announced the availability of a new line of processors within the Xeon family, made up of chips with six processing cores. Based on the same 32 nanometer architecture that gave rise to the Core i7-980X detailed here last week, they offer a considerable increase in performance without affecting in any way the thermal envelope of the previous models (with only four cores).

With the upgrade, the Xeon line gains nine new members (all with six cores), with speeds ranging from 2GHz (for workstations low voltage) and 3.33 GHz. According to Intel, the performance gain offered by them in relation to the modelsquad-core (when compared at the same operating frequency) it varies between 10% for tasks performed in only one core and 60% for multiprocessing, benefiting many applications used in the professional market.

Xeon's technical advances make it a far more favorable choice for Macs Pro, as it offers 12MB of cache and improvements for a number of recent Intel technologies. One of them Turbo Boost, which now allows an increase in operating frequency of up to 7.5% for all models in the line, by reducing the number of active processing cores in the case of a 3.33GHz processor, the speed of clock can reach 3.6GHz.

In addition, the new chips also bring news related to their use in environments where data protection is essential. A new set of instructions added to them speeds up data encryption operations via hardware, favoring any application in this area. Reliable execution technology has also been added to the new Xeon (in English, Trusted Execution), which protects computers from malicious codes without reducing the processing speed.

No predictions were made about the availability of computers based on the new Xeon processors, while companies like HP and Dell expect to adopt them in the next 45 days. Apple was not mentioned among them, but we are waiting for an update in the line of Macs Pro soon.
