The formal launch event should still take place later today, but Intel gave an exclusive BBC News finally announcing its long-awaited new generation of “Ivy Bridge” processors, which is expected to equip future Macs launched by Apple.

That initial phase put on the market chips quad-core manufactured by the 22 nanometer process, in the Core i5 and i7 models for desktops and big laptops. The models dual-core and low power consumption (including Core i3 models) will only be available later.
Going from 32 to 22 nanometers, Intel promises to bring together in a smaller physical space even more computational processing an average of 20% more performance while consuming 20% less energy than the previous "Sandy Bridge". These new chips also use Tri-Gate 3D transistors, which further contribute to this energy optimization.
With this first line already available, Apple is free to update at least its Macs Pro, iMacs and MacBooks Pro. J MacBooks Air and Macs mini will have to wait a little longer.
