Almost a year ago, with the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat, Hangouts replaced the native Android messaging app. With that, Google wanted to combine its messenger app with a classic service for sending and receiving SMS and MMS by cell phones. However, in 2014, the thinking seems to be different and, after a lot of investment in the integration of messages through Hangouts, the search giant goes back and presents a more colorful messaging app, with visual characteristics very similar to the current Contacts app. and Dialer.

The Nexus 6 will be the first smartphone to leave the factory with the official version of the new messaging app. The new app will be called «Messenger» (yes, very similar to the current Facebook messaging app) and comes with Material Design visual guidelines.
