Instagram has become space for the sale of skulls and other human bones. This is pointing to an investigation conducted by Wired Magazine and published on Wednesday (21). According to the report, the value of transactions made on the platform multiplied by ten in just three years. Most buyers are collectors who see the rare bones build-up a hobby legitimate, although eccentric. Instagram probes this type of trade and excludes posts that promote bone sales.

However, according to a survey by architects Damien Huffer and Shawn Graham, in 2013, 4,190 (about R $ 21,159.50, in direct conversion) were traded on merchandise with human parts on Instagram. In 2016, the number jumped to 46 thousand (R $ 232,300, in direct conversion). Huffer expects sales to be much higher today. There is also the fact that several sellers do not advertise the price of items in the post and prefer to trade them for direct messages.

The trade in human bones on the Internet is nothing new. Until 2016, eBay was one of the leading sites for buying and selling human body parts, with several items being auctioned there. That year, however, the company banned the remains market, and users began using Instagram for it.
The sale of skulls and bones in the social network is similar to other informal businesses. A salesman posts the photo of a skull, for example, and suggests a certain price for the product in the caption of the publication. Interested buyers then send private messages to the advertiser who negotiates the best offer. With the deal closed, the buyer deposits the corresponding amount into the seller's account and receives the item at his home.
Sought by TechTudo, the press office of Instagram in Brazil said that this type of trade is prohibited on the social network. We don't allow the sale of human bones on Instagram, and we remove such content as soon as we become aware of it, a company spokesman said. It is noteworthy that the official means of trading items on the platform is the section Store, where you can find products such as clothing, electronics, books and accessories.

In Brazil, Law 9,434 / 97 only allows the movement of tissues, organs and parts of the human body, whether in life or after the death of the person, for cases of transplantation or medical treatment. The sale is expressly vetoed by the text under any circumstances and may constitute organ trafficking.
