Imagination Technologies Announces New Generation of Graphics Hardware Currently Used in iPhones / iPods Touch

Imagination Technologies today announced a new graphics chipset for mobile devices, the PowerVR SGX545, which is the new generation of graphics hardware currently used by Apple on iPhones / iPods touch. The chip supports OpenGL 3.2 (a 3D graphics library found only on desktops) and OpenCL 1.0 (currently only supported by Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard), with performance capable of generating 40 million polygons per second at an operating frequency of only 200MHz .

It was also implemented by the company in the new product to support several advanced aspects of Microsoft's DirectX 10 technology, making it capable of being adopted by more smartphone manufacturers and handhelds in general. As the chip is also compatible with OpenCL, it is possible to use it in conjunction with the CPU of the devices to accelerate the processing of general computational operations, with high numerical precision, full support for 32 bits and partial support for 64 bits.

The previous generation of PowerVR graphics, currently used in iPhones / iPods touch, is capable of generating only 28 million polygons per second and supports a maximum of OpenGL | ES 2.0, which already gives greater possibilities for game developers. Theoretically, the association of the new chipset with an ARMCortex A9 processor dual-core able to compete in performance with the new NVIDIA Tegra 2, announced yesterday at CES 2010.
