IFixIt disassembles the Galaxy S20 Ultra and smartphone receives a score of 3 on repairability

This time iFixit is bringing the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra to the bench. The top of Samsung's $ 1,400 line tops unfortunately received a 3 rating from iFixIt.

It seems that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra did not pass on a high note when it comes to repair.

Unfortunately this has been a recurring fact when we talk about any other Samsung device recently launched. Since the Galaxy S9 + scored 4 and the entire Galaxy S10 line received the same score as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, grade 3.

The reason for the low grades is also repeated for the Galaxy S20 Ultra, "glue all over the smartphone" was a very negative point, but what was really disappointing is that to repair Samsung's top-of-the-line screen, it is necessary to dismantle more than half smartphone and that doesn’t please anyone.

On the other hand, iFixit gave us the opportunity to get a good look at Samsung’s 100x Space Zoom camera. IFixit even made considerations about it. "Instead of focusing your image directly on the sensor, this camera uses a prism to reflect the light sideways at a 90 degree angle. This is impressive! After passing through the prism, which has its own optical image stabilizer, the image travels a sliding box full of zoom lenses and finally hits the sensor mounted at the end of the tunnel ".

IFixIt made some other considerations regarding the Galaxy S20 Ultra, see:

  • The phillips screws are all identical, so it only takes one key to loosen them all. (positive point)
  • Many components are modular and independently replaceable, but the absence of the headset means that there is more wear and tear on the USB-C port. (neutral point)
  • The repair starts with the part of the back cover that has a fragile glass and where the glue begins to appear. (negative point)
  • Replacing the glued battery is more difficult than ever, especially due to the presence of several cables that are over it. (negative point)
  • Screen repairs, very common, require a complete disassembly or replacement of half of the smartphone. (negative point)
