IDC: Windows 7 fails to bring down Mac growth, even higher than the industry average

In the United States alone, Mac sales grew 31% in the last quarter and kept Apple ahead of the PC industry average once again, with 1.523 million computers sold according to IDC estimates. The number was able to hold the company among the top five computer manufacturers in the North American market, but it also motivated IDC to project an estimated 5.6 million machines sold during 2009 in the country 8.2% more than in 2008, placing Apple as the fourth largest manufacturer of the year.

Windows 7 failed to put Mac growth below the average for the PC industry, but it did slow Apple's market gain somewhat, as it boosted sales of mainstream computers, in addition to maintaining the success of netbooks up there. The North American PC market grew by 22.7% at the end of 2009 with 20.466 million computers sold in the period, overcoming the economic problems that were felt at the end of 2008 worldwide.

In global numbers, Apple was not among the top five manufacturers and the average growth of the PC industry was slightly lower: 15.2% it is estimated that Apple grew twice as much outside the United States as this average, encouraging its performance even more in the fourth quarter of 2009. Given the success that all members of the Mac line acquired after the first quarter of last year, Apple is likely to exhibit good numbers related to the Mac at its next financial results conference, yet in this month.
