According to the publication, the Map Kit would not be used by the end consumer, as it should serve as an API for developers to create navigation software for branded phones. The city mapping service was reportedly being provided by Russian operator Yandex and the US travel website Booking Holdings, along with other software companies. United States vs. Huawei
The move is part of an initiative to build Huawei's more robust service ecosystem to reduce the dependency on services from US companies like Google. In May, the United States placed Huawei on a list of Chinese corporations prohibited from buying and selling equipment and technology from US companies. Shortly thereafter, some US vendors returned to sell their services to Huawei, but the company still does not have access to key technologies such as Android updates and Google Maps itself.
The company also recently announced the release of HarmonyOS, its own open source operating system, to compete with Android on smartphones, smart TVs, smartwatches and car systems.
