The NIS (Social Identification Number) is the registration number of citizens who are entitled to participate in social programs instituted by the Federal Government. Through the Cadastro Único, issued by Caixa Econômica Federal, people can enroll in programs such as Bolsa Famlia, Minha Casa, Minha Vida, ID Jovem, among others. The initiative seeks to support Brazilian families in poverty and extreme poverty.
NIS registration can be done at your municipality's CRAS (Social Assistance Reference Center). If you have lost your Social Identification Number, you can find it online at the Government Citizen Consultation portal. Here's how to know your NIS number over the Internet.

Step 1. Access the Consulta Cidado portal (aplicacoes.mds.gov.br/sagi/consulta_cidadao/index.php), Government website created for NIS consultation;

Step 2. On the main page, enter your personal details such as full name, date of birth, mother's name and state and municipality of residence. Do not use accents or special characters;

Step 3. To perform the query, check the "I'm not a robot" checkbox;

Step 4. Then select the option "Issue" to view your registration;

Step 5. A new page will be displayed containing your NIS number in the left corner of the screen. You can still view your personal information on the screen to confirm that your data is correct in the system;

Step 6. If you want to generate a document with your data and NIS number for printing, select the "Print" option in the "Action" tab in the right corner of the screen.
