How to create custom Instagram filter

In 2019, Facebook launched a tool that allows anyone to create personalized augmented reality filters and share directly in stories.

Now, we will teach you all the steps to use Spark AR Studio, from the creation process to the export of your filter to Instagram. The application is available for Windows and Mac.

Creating your project

1. After you have downloaded Spark AR on your computer and accepted the "Terms of Service", open the program, access the "Create New" tab on the left panel of the screen and click on the "Blank Project" option.

2. See if the "Scene" option is selected on the left side of the program and then click on "Add Object".

3. Spark AR opens up a series of new options. Look for the "Face Tracker" option and then press the "Insert" button.

4. Now using the right mouse button, follow the following path: faceTracker0> Add> Plane.

5. In the lower left corner of the platform click on "Add Asset" and then on "Material".

6. Now is the time when you import the custom art you want to use in creating the project. In these cases, you can choose any resource that you created in Photoshop or another image program to add to your work. Once again click on "Add Asset" and then on "Import From Computer".

7. On the right side of the screen, select "Material". This will open a new panel on the right side of the display, where you must click on "Texture" and select the art you uploaded.

8. Selecting the "plane0" tool on the left side, link the object you added to the project. In the "Enable for" tab, on the right side, select the "Material" option.

9. Now you can start playing with art design. In the "Scale" and "Position" options, you control the size of the image and the positioning in the filter.

Exporting to Instagram

1. After leaving the filter the way you wanted, select the option "Upload" in the bottom left corner of the computer to export the filter.

2. The program will check if everything is ok in the project and give you a green light. After confirmation, click "Upload" again.

3. The application will direct you directly to the Spark AR Hub website, where you can publish the filter on Instagram.

4. Before you even submit the project for approval, you can click on the "Test on device" option. The site will provide you with a link with access to the filter on Instagram, but it cannot be published before the platform is approved.

5. In the "Submit" section, write a description of the filter to the Instagram analyst and fill in the rest of the information.

6. Record a video demonstration of the filter to attach with the rest of the project and add it on the Spark AR Hub website.

7. After all the procedures, Spark AR Hub will provide you with the information with the updated status of the analysis of your filter and an estimated time for its approval.

8. Once approved, the filter will be available to you along with the other options in your Stories.
