Hitachi launches 2TB hard drive at 7,200RPM for desktops

Hitachi GST announced yesterday the availability of the Deskstar 7K2000, its newest hard drive for desktops. The fourth generation model of the line offers 2TB of capacity in a five-plate design (using its perpendicular magnetic recording technology), with a performance of 7,200RPM. The more basic family has also been updated and now offers versions ranging from 160GB to 1TB.

The top-of-the-line model is a 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb / s drive, equipped with 32MB of cache; given the technological advances achieved by Hitachi, it now consumes 10% less power when stopped.

The new products will start shipping soon to computer manufacturers; the suggested price of the Deskstar 7K2000 is $ 330. Western Digital and Seagate are two strong competitors that also launched 2TB models at 7,200RPM recently, but all of them are still intended only for desktops, which continue to offer twice the capacity of what is possible to embed in a laptop.
