Corning Gorilla Glass 6

Gorilla Glass 6 has drop resistance twice as high as its predecessor

THE Corning, maker of the famous Gorilla Glass, is one of Apple’s most long-standing and loyal partners – so much so that it received an appetizing $ 200 million investment from Apple just over a year ago, in the search for a tougher compound to coat our precious smartphones.

We don’t know if today’s announcement can already be attributed to Cupertino’s hand, but the fact is that the company is presenting the brand new Gorilla Glass 6 with some really cool news.

Corning Gorilla Glass 6

Unlike previous generations of glass, which always focused on introducing new technologies to prevent the appearance of scratches and marks, Corning’s goal with the new version of its flagship is to improve its resistance to drops and impacts – and, it is worth remembering , these are quite different aspects, since (in general) the harder a glass (ie, the more resistant to scratches), the more likely it is to break on impact.

In tests carried out by the company, Gorilla Glass 6 managed to survive 15 falls on a concrete surface at a height of one meter, which is a result about twice as good as its predecessor. Even so, the manufacturer claims that the new generation has the same resistance to risks and brands, without having losses in this field due to the advance in the other aspect.

It is easy to understand why Corning chose to focus on falls in the new generation of Gorilla Glass: with smartphones (not only from Apple) adopting more and more constructions with predominance of glass, consumers need more resistant and reliable materials – after all, even Safer hands can make a mistake from time to time.

Gorilla Glass 6 is already in production and available to manufacturers; the first smartphones equipped with the material are expected to appear in the coming months. We still don’t know, however, if the next iPhones will come with this new generation of glass – to be confirmed.
