Instagram has revealed that it is now deleting photos of users who reproduce the "OK" sign with their hands. The company says the gesture has been used by white supremacists to express hate speech. The sign, until then used only as confirmation, was appropriated by American extremist groups to illustrate talk of white pride. The gesture has even been added to the list of hate symbols of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization responsible for monitoring hate crimes.
In response, Instagram has adopted new rules in its post reporting tool, which may result in deletion of the content and banning the user. The gesture politics originated in 2017, when 4Chan forum users stated that the three-finger symbol represents the letter "W" from White, which means white in Portuguese, while the thumb and index finger create the design of the letter P (power, or power in Portuguese).
