Google Nest Mini vs Amazon Echo Dot: Check out the differences

Recently, both Amazon and Google brought their smart speakers equipped with digital assistants to Brazil for the first time. Both Echo dot as for Nest mini are already on sale at same price in the country: $ 350. But what are the differences between them? Which one is worth it?

THE Digital Look prepared a comparison of key features and technical specifications of the two smart speaker input models made available by Amazon and Google in Brazil. Check out what Echo Dot and Nest Mini are capable of, and decide if, for you, it pays more to Alexa or Google Assistant.

Amazon Echo Dot

The most basic model of Amazon products compatible with the digital assistant Alexa is the Echo Dot speaker, launched in Brazil in its third generation.

The small speaker can be placed in any room of the house and, when connected to a Wi-Fi network, can answer voice commands from the user. Equipped with Alexa, she is able to play music, answer questions, read news, check the weather, set reminders and more.

The Echo Dot has four long range microphones that can be turned off at the push of a button on the top of the speaker. The device works both via Bluetooth connected to other devices and independently via Wi-Fi.

Regarding sound, the Echo Dot has a 1.6 inch speaker and 3.5 mm output to connect to other speakers. The speaker also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Echo Dot also needs to be always plugged in, as it has no internal battery.

Google Nest Mini

Launched in October in the United States, the Nest Mini speaker did not take long to reach Brazil. Google's portfolio entry template has basic functions very similar to Amazon's: voice commands that allow you to play music, answer phone calls, or then search the web.

While Amazon's box has four microphones, Google's box has only three. Despite this, the company says it has more voice recognition power than previous models, as well as more processing for artificial intelligence features required by Google Assistant.

The Nest Mini has 360 audio playback capability using a 40mm diameter driver. Your device has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and can still be connected to Chromecast. The Nest Mini also needs to always be plugged in, as it has no internal battery.

Alexa and Google Assistant

With very similar specifications and features, the big difference between the two speakers is the artificial intelligence that functions as the device's "brain": Alexa and Google Assistant.

The two speakers allow the user, with voice commands, to perform some tasks such as playing music, searching the internet, creating reminders and more. But the two assistants have differences between them.

Google Assistant has enhanced speech recognition that adapts user interaction to better understand you. Already Alexa bets on their "skills" and integration with various third party applications.

Overall, the two offers are quite competent, but Google Assistant has a slight advantage as it has been available for longer in Brazil and is also integrated with Android phones – which makes a lot of people used to dealing with Google's artificial intelligence. Still, Alexa tends to improve over time, with new skills being added constantly.
