Google may develop card to rival Apple Card, says website | Digital benches

Google is expected to launch physical and virtual brand cards soon, according to news from the technology portal TechCrunch on Friday (17). According to the website, the company is developing its own payment system linked to Google Pay, to compete with the Apple Card, a service launched by the rival in August 2019. The Google application currently allows to make payments online or via approach when linking a traditional card to Google Pay.

Asked by TechCrunch, Google did not answer the question directly, but said it was studying the area: "We are exploring how we can partner with banks and credit unions in the United States to offer smart banking accounts through Google Pay." The company also said it wanted to help customers with useful information and budget tools, keeping the money in an account insured by the country's institutions. "We hope to share more details in the coming months," said Google.

How should the Google Card work?

To use the possible Google card, the user will need to connect to a bank account or a credit union beforehand. People can add money or transfer funds from their account (probably from Google Pay) to the card. With Google Card, you will be able to purchase items using your physical card or cell phone.

In addition, the company makes the virtual version of the card available on the cell phone for mobile payments via Bluetooth. The virtual card number will be available for online payments through the application. TechCrunch relied on information shared by its sources and images leaked from the possible Google Card.

Card transactions can be done through a Google application. The tool will allow users to monitor their transactions, including checking their balance, statement and blocking the account. The card must be associated with different banking partners such as CITI and Stanford Federal Credit Union, but it is worth remembering that there is still nothing confirmed by Google.

Apple is a little ahead of Google in this matter, since the Apple Card was launched in August last year in the United States. The card offers users some advantages, such as exemption from annuity charges, a daily cashback program (Daily Cash) that varies between 1% and 3% for purchases of company products and in other stores.

It remains to be seen what the advantages of Google Card will be, as the company has not yet made the product official. If you follow the lines of fintechs active, Google should also offer some benefits. Both products have the virtual card.

The main difference pointed out at the moment is the fact that the Apple card is available in the credit version, while that of Google would be only debit. Another possible distinction is in relation to partnerships: the Apple Card is not linked to banks, whereas the Google Card signals the cooperation of other financial institutions.
