Google Maps can be used to find out the distance between two cities. There are two ways to use the traffic app to do the measurement: plotting a car route or using the measurement tool, which tells the distance in a straight line useful to estimate the flight time, for example. The Google feature promises to help the user to plan trips or even commuting and is available in the free app for Android phones and iPhone (iOS).
In the following tutorial, check out how to measure the distance between two places on Google Maps from your phone and computer. On the cell phone, the procedure was performed on a Moto E4 with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, but the tips also apply to users of Apple devices.

Step 1. Open Google Maps and tap "Go" in the bottom right corner of the screen. By default, the application sets your current location as a starting point. If you want to select another place, touch "Your location" and enter the name of the city;

Step 2. Then, choose the name of the destination city and perform the search. Be sure to select the route by car to see the distance between cities by road. The mileage is displayed at the bottom of the screen, as well as the estimated time;

Step 3. To measure the distance in a straight line, tap on the city name on the map and then click on the city name again at the bottom of the screen;

Step 4. Then, go to "Measure distance" and place the second point on the destination city. The distance in a straight line will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. The time is not indicated, as the means of transport and the route to be used are not known.

Step 4. To measure the distance in a straight line, locate the first city and click the right mouse button on it. In the context menu, go to "Measure distance";

Step 5. Finally, locate the second city and click on it to add a point. The distance in a straight line will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. The time is not indicated, as the means of transport and the route to be used are not known.
